How long does it take for my results?
Test results through AMH are exceptionally faster than other services like a local clinic or even your doctor. Also, we can usually send you in the same day that you call. Most test results come back the next day or second day.
How often should I be tested?
Your testing habits should reflect your sexual habits. If you have multiple partners each year, you should also be screened for HIV/STDs a few times a year. There are tests that can identify recent exposure. Other tests such as the HIV antibody test, are considered conclusive three months after the exposure, provided you have a healthy immune system. If you are concerned about a specific exposure, or if you are not sure if you should keep testing, we recommend calling for more information.
I received a blood transfusion 6 years ago, should I keep testing for HIV?
You have most likely taken the HIV antibody test which is considered conclusive after three months. In some cases, an individual suffering from an immune deficiency may want to wait longer to take this test. You should also make sure you have been tested for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. If you are concerned about HIV infection, and you do have an immune deficiency, you may want to talk to us about antigen testing.
Why don’t people go to their doctor for testing?
It is not uncommon for people to feel uncomfortable talking to their doctor about their sexual exposures. Also, you will probably have to wait for an appointment, and even up to a few weeks for the test results. At AMH you can go in the same day you call and results come back in 1 to 2 days.
Can I test before three months?
Yes, for example, the HIV DNA PCR is conclusive 28 days after your exposure. Testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea can detect infection days or weeks after infection. If you are anxious about a recent exposure or if your exposure is significant you don’t have to wait three months to be tested. In fact, research suggests early testing and treatment could have a significant effect on your overall health.
I know you can have an STD and not show symptoms, but if I don’t show symptoms what am I worried about?
Even if you don’t have signs or symptoms you can transmit HIV/STDs to your partner. Do not under estimate the severity of infection simply because there are not obvious signs. Although recent infection with and STD can start off with little or no signs, they can develop into major health conditions. Silent infections like chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause infertility and PID (pelvic inflammatory disease.) Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are often referred to as silent infections but can lead to liver inflammation, cirrhosis, or hepatocellular carcinoma. Treatment for HIV, when caught early, can add years to a person’s life. A person that is unaware of an STD infection is missing the chance to prevent serious health conditions.
A friend told me I should not use my health insurance for testing, why?
Testing for HIV or STDs is not the best thing to have on your health insurance record. If you were to test positive, it could make getting a policy in the future very difficult. In some cases, callers have been canceled or their rates have gone up. Also, the test results can often take a few weeks, instead of 1 to 2 days through AMH.
